Steven Smith started working with clay a decade ago. Unsatisfied with the constraints of evening classes (as much to his mother’s dismay), he eventually stripped out the guest room of his Walthamstow home and installed a kiln to create his studio.
Kiln-formed arts indulge Steven’s passion for both arts and science. The transformation inside the kiln is so dramatic that knowing a little about the qualities of the materials before they go in helps to predict the results, but you can never be quite sure what will come out. Throw in a sense of adventure and a bit of luck and the results are usually as desired – with a the occasional surprise thrown in.
When not working in his studio, Steven mainly spends his time visiting the theatre and exhibitions, or tending his garden. He lives in Walthamstow, North-East London and earns his living as an ICT consultant for London Schools.
